On Saturday night, Birmingham City’s EFL Championship campaign will begin. Bowyer’s side will begin the season with an away trip to newly relegated, Sheffield United.
It is an eagerly anticipated tie between two clubs who are both coming into the 2021/22 season with a breath of optimism from the supporters.
The Blades will have a clear ambition for this campaign, achieve promotion. They are clearly one of the favourites to go up, however they will have to be at the top of their game to pick up the win against Bowyer’s Blues.
Slavisa Jokanovic has stepped into the Sheffield United hotseat. The Serbian manager has achieved promotion from the Championship already, most recently with Fulham.
The Blades have done a good job at keeping hold of their players after relegation, and have a squad that includes plenty of players that know how to do well in this division. Rhian Brewster will be one to watch out for, the young forward set the league on fire during his loan spell with Swansea two years ago.
Birmingham fans might just have a slight feel of confidence entering the match aswell though. The Blues finished last season spectacularly, going from relegation certainties, to staying up with two games to go.
Most of the credit for the remarkable turnaround has to be at the Birmingham City manager, Lee Bowyer.
Despite constant battles with relegation in the last 4 or 5 years, the combination of Bowyer and some exciting signings could be what it takes to make Blues a dark horse for this season.
Tahith Chong is sure to have a bright campaign and Chuks Aneke will be another to keep an eye out for, the powerful forward could finally be the answer to Birmingham City’s goal issues.
Sheffield United will be without Enda Stevens and Jack O’Connell for Saturday night’s clash.
Ivan Sunjic and Marc Roberts will both be available for the season opener. However, Dion Sanderson and Neil Etheridge won’t feature for the Blues.
I think that Blues will be more competitive than expected in this game, Sheffield United will likely be the better side, but I think Birmingham might be able to take a point from this one.
