On Wednesday night, Birmingham City – the only team in the league to have not conceded a goal yet – will meet promotion contenders, Bournemouth.
Blues have started this campaign very strongly. A gritty 0-1 away victory against Sheffield United got the season off to a flying start. This result was followed by a tough 0-0 draw with Stoke City, which Blues probably edged.
Birmingham’s chances could be boosted by the return of Manchester United loannee, Tahith Chong, who got Man of the Match in his debut.
They will need to improve their clinicality if they are to take anything from the midweek clash. If Scott Hogan and Jon Leko had tucked away to fairly straightforward chances on Saturday, they would be top of the league now.
Bournemouth, who come into this game level on points with Bowyer’s men, will be confident for this game. They gave one of the top teams in the league and a manager in Scott Parker who has promotion experience from this level.
They have had no issues with scoring goals in their opening two games, however they have let in 3 goals. Phillip Billing, the towering attacking midfielder has been pivotal for the Cherries, netting in both of their fixtures to date.
Manager Scott Parker did achieve promotion with Fulham a couple of seasons ago, but many people still believe he underachieved. He had a top level championship squad and should really have finished in the top two places. Will the same happen with Bournemouth?
Tahith Chong will be available for Bowyer’s selection on Wednesday night. Dion Sanderson and Neil Etheridge will still be unavailable to feature.
Ben Pearson and Junior Stanislas will be able to return on Wednesday. Steve Cook and Arnaut Danjuma’s availability will come down to a late review and Cherries midfielders David Brooks and Jefferson Lerma are both suspended.
I can see Bournemouth being quite dominant in this one and although Blues will put up a strong fight, I think the Cherries’ quality will be too much for Birmingham to handle.
